About Us

Founders Almo Brett

From two blokes, two utes and a dog to Canterbury’s most established mobile crushing service.

They say that great things come from humble beginnings - and our story is a testament to that.

From our early days spent transporting a single screen from one site to the next, we now have a fully equipped fleet of quarry and crushing machinery and a team of nearly 40 dedicated professionals.

Founded in 1994 as Canterbury Screen Hire Ltd

Our story began with a commitment to delivering top-tier equipment and services to the construction and quarrying industries.

With a focus on customer satisfaction, we quickly gained recognition as a reliable partner in meeting our clients’ needs. In 1999, we started a secondary business, Canterbury Crushing Ltd, to further meet the growing demand within the industry.

With each passing year, we refined our processes, invested in new equipment, and added to our dedicated team of professionals who shared our vision. In 2005, we made the decision to amalgamate the two businesses into Southern Screenworks Limited, allowing us to streamline our operations and offer a more cohesive service to our clients.

Since then, we’ve gone from strength to strength, providing mobile crushing and screening services throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Winner of

MIMICO Environment and Community Gold Award

Southern Screenworks secured a Gold award at the MIMICO Environment and Community Awards. Former Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Morgan Williams, commended the firm for its work in the Chatham Islands, where it successfully managed the construction, operation, and eventual decommissioning of a quarry at Ohinemama.

The venture produced over 100,000 cubic metres of material for a new $52 million wharf, all while working 800km from mainland New Zealand and maintaining vital community relations. Upon completion, the Ohinemama quarry was fully restored to farmland, a triumph in both environmental stewardship and community engagement.
